Today I finally finished the second season of 13 Reasons Why and I have to be honest, I struggled to get through it. I know most of you are thinking it was the content, it wasn’t; well not really.
The fact is we’ve seen and heard the content before, all last season. There wasn’t much that surprised me and although I understand each season NEEDS to be 13 episodes (that’s part of the gimmick) it really didn’t need to be.
The show dragged on and on with some characters I could have done without seeing so much of. Clay for example. He’s not a character I like anymore. At first I was trying to understand him and feel for him but this second season, I was just plain sick of him.
It didn’t get any better the 13th and last episode. Clay, again, can’t mind his business and gets involved in another, what I can only imagine, season of him whining and disrespecting his parents and friends.
I’m over him. But honestly, I might be over the whole show. The last episode left me upset. All season we saw Tyler getting angrier and towards the end getting raped and with all his anger and rage, he was able to be talked down by Clay (someone who has been a part of his torture, in a matter of minutes).
I texted my friend immediately with not 13 but 3 different scenarios I would have rather seen. Scenes that would have made me feel invested once again and confident that the next season would amount to drama and less emotionless whining.
1. Tyler gets confronted by Clay and shoots him. He immediately realizes his mistake and that he doesn’t want to hurt people, Clay being Clay even though he is shot (not fatally) still helps Tyler get away.
2. The teens see the text, they alert the DJ who turns the music off and tells everyone to evacuate. Bryce and his dickhead friends push out first, trying to save their own skin and thus a tragedy ensues.
3. Tyler goes into the school, hellbent on making a statement. He kills himself in front of the locker of the boy (I forget his name) that raped him and leaves everything behind. All the photos he’s taken that can bring down anyone and everyone. He is gone but he’s able to take everyone with him and finally get everyone who needs it justice and closure.
That third one by the way would end the show. No need for another uneventful and rehashing season!
Ugh. My head hurts just thinking about all the other endings that could have been and why they chose to go with the one they did.
I guess I’ll have to wait and see the previews for the third season, judge it and determine if it’s really worth me spending 13 hours of my life on.
