Years ago ….. and I’m talking probably about 10-12 years ago, I wrote a novel. Not just any novel but one of four books in a series.
I wrote them on my phone (at the time my phone had a full functioning keyboard), posted them onto a mobile story website (I wish it still existed but it’s been shut down) and also wrote it entirely in the text lingo of the time; i.e. she looked stra8 @ em’
It was a mess!
But I received great reviews for the story itself and I had a pretty good fan base going.
After a few years I decided to post the story online again but time had passed, I was older and so was the audience on the site I wanted to use (Thenextbigwriter.com). I decided, in order to make the story work again I needed to edit it out of text talk and into the English language. What I wasn’t ready for….. was the fact that because I wrote it completely on my phone and directly to the site, I had never gone back to read the story itself. That meant I had plot holes, names wrong and certain timestamps that didn’t make sense.
It was my first big piece and I thought to myself, I can fix this.
Well, here we are 13-14 years later and it still isn’t fixed.
In my defense, it hasn’t been for lack of trying.
I have over the years tried to reboot this story:
- All of the text lingo is gone
- I’ve changed the names of mistaken characters to correct them
- I have tried to tie up the timestamps that were incorrect
But at the end of the day, the story (to me) still sounded off and childish.
After that, I tried to rework the whole book (just the first book to start).
I tried changing things, reordering certain events when I realized that what I changed in the first book would affect everything in every book after!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It wasn’t working and I was getting frustrated and the story confusing; so I gave up for a few years.
Then last night……… it hit me!
It’s MY story!
Mine, all mine. I have the power to do with it what I want. It’s never been published and at the end of the day I don’t owe anyone anything. BAM!
So I sat down with my story and I looked at my characters and the plot as a whole and made some decisions that I’m pretty happy with. Soon, I will start writing.
I haven’t decided if I’m going to be posting as I write. I tried it a few months back with the 6 Month Lease and found that I couldn’t keep up. With a newborn now in my arms as I type this, I’m POSITIVE there is no way I would be able to keep up but I like the idea of writing a few chapters ahead of time and posting them when I can.
